Lisy prevails in playoff drama in Czech Championship
19 July 2017: Ondrej Lisy fought through an epic playoff showdown with New Zealander Markopolo Fullepp to win the Faldo Series Czech Championship at Greensgate Resort. The pair could not be split in three days of ordinary competition and even then it took 7 extra holes for Lisy to claim the win. Lisy will now attend his first Faldo Series Grand Final.
“That was an incredible finish!” Commented the Champion Ondrej Lisy. “I am ecstatic to reach the Grand Final. I played great golf throughout the week and thankfully I managed to hold on in the end. I felt a lot of pressure in the playoff with Markopolo, so to win this tournament is an amazing feeling.
The 7th Czech Championship attracted 87 players hailing from 9 different countries. The players were greeted by sunshine on the first day but had to contend with persistent rain on the second before the conditions calmed for the finale. The Czech Championship has produced some fine graduates with Simon Zach currently making waves in the United States and Jiri Zuska the current Faldo Series Grand Final European Champion.
With plenty to live up to the players did not disappoint. Lisy fired 73, 72 and 74 to face off with fellow Under-18 competitor Fullepp before his birdie on the 7th hole claimed the spoils. Returning players will have noticed that Greensgate Resort has undergone a transformation since last year. Holes 5, 7, 9 and 16 were re-shaped as well as significant elevation changes throughout the course.
The Boys’ Under-21 also featured a playoff. David Benak shot 74,76, and 71 before his playoff with Dutch National Julien Mager. With two holes to play Benak needed to find two shots to force a playoff. He duly responded with two birdies on the two Par Fours. With momentum on his side Benak birdied the second additional hole to fight through to his first ever Faldo Series Grand Final.
Krystof Rucka sparkled in the Boys’ Under-16 division. He held off a strong challenge from Hynek Groh to win by two shots and claim a place in his first Grand Final. Groh has form in the Faldo Series – he won the Under-16 category last year and put in a very solid performance at the 2016 Grand Final. Rucka ignored reputations to fire 75, 75 and 70. His last round was the joint-lowest of the week and he surged to victory with three birdies in the last four holes.
On the Girls’ side Bulgarian Sofia Seldemirova was utterly dominant in the Under-21 section. A remarkable 71 to open the competition created masses of daylight between her and her rivals. There was no let up as a 74 and a 76 increased the victory margin to ten shots. The 2017 Grand Final will be her second – she qualified for the tournament in 2015 at The Greenbrier Resort in the United States.
The final division was the Girls’ Under-16s. Russian national Rivekka Dzhumagulova claimed a three shot victory over Karolina Krasova of the Czech Republic. Dzhumagulova wasn’t at her best on the first day as she carded a 78 but she came roaring back to shoot 72 and 73 and leave the others trailing. Dzhumagulova is rewarded with a place in her first ever Grand Final.
Sir Nick Faldo’s personal coach Keith Wood conducted lessons throughout the week. Greensgate Resort is extremely committed to junior golf development with over 50 young players regularly attending coaching sessions.
Today, 40 Faldo Series tournaments take place in 30-plus countries worldwide, touching thousands of golfers each year. Past winners include Major Champions Tseng Ya-ni and Rory McIlroy, who took his tally of professional Major titles to four with his wins at the 2014 Open Championship and US PGA Championship.
